A description that appeals to the senses (what is seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched) and makes the reader perceive the scene, not only understand it.
In Demons
The flush of indignation covered her cheeks; she took off her round hat and gloves, fell on her knees before the icon, right onto the filthy sidewalk, and devoutly made three prostrations to the ground.
The "flush of indignation," the hat and gloves taken off, and the "filthy sidewalk" under the knees put the scene before the eyes. The contact of the body with the dirt of the street makes the devout gesture seem even more out of place among the mockers.

Even if I do not believe entirely, still I will not say that God should be shot [...] one jumps out of bed at night, in nothing but stockings, and starts making the sign of the cross before the icon so that God will send faith, because even then I could not be at peace: is there a God or not?
