How does Demons end?

Demons ends in four fates: Shatov and Kirillov die the same night, Stepan Trofimovich dies on the road, Stavrogin is found hanged in the attic, and Pyotr Stepanovich escapes.

In Part Three, the quintet shoots Shatov in the Stavrogins' park, on the night of the day Marie gives birth to the boy whom he claims as his son. Virginsky shouts that it is not that, Liamshin squeals like an animal, and Pyotr dictates to Kirillov the note that claims the crime; Kirillov kills himself and Pyotr takes the train. Marie, seeing Kirillov dead, runs with the boy into the street saying that they have killed her husband, and the two die of the cold and the panic. Liamshin hands everything over to the authorities; Virginsky and Erkel are arrested, and Liputin and Tolkachenko, after fleeing. Pyotr, abroad, three months later passes for a genius.

Stepan sets out on foot, falls ill at an inn, reads the passage about the pigs, confesses that he has lied his whole life, and dies confessed, with Varvara Petrovna at his side. Near the end, Stavrogin writes to Darya Pavlovna a letter in which he calls her to Switzerland, says he fears suicide as the last deception, and that the strength he has proven is limitless, without finding where to apply it. Varvara and Darya rush to Skvoreshniki and find him in the attic, with a note that says only that no one is to blame. The doctors, after the autopsy, reject the hypothesis of madness.

The novel closes the Kirillov and Stavrogin pair by inversion: one dies convinced and shows himself beside himself, the other dies empty and shows himself in full possession of his acts.
