In Spanish, novela, a short self-contained narrative of its own subject, which the novel fits in along the road or at the inn. Part One has the one of the Curious Impertinent, which the priest reads aloud, and the one of the captive, which the captive himself tells. The bachelor disapproves of the first, as out of place, and the narrator explains, in Part Two, that he preferred episodes born of the same events to loose or artificial novellas.
