Questions · One, No One, and One Hundred Thousand

How many pages does One, No One, and One Hundred Thousand have?

One, No One, and One Hundred Thousand runs about 160 pages in a common edition, divided into eight Books and sixty-three short chapters, each with a title by the author. The number varies with the format and the font size, but it is a short novel, quick to read.

The Books vary in length. Book VIII, which closes the novel, has only four chapters, and Book VI six; Book II has twelve, and Book III ten. The chapters vary too: the shortest is a little over a hundred words, and the longest, Chapter VIII of Book V, runs past two thousand words and is the center of the work.

For reading without rush, the reading schedule divides the novel into two weeks, at about 11 pages a day, with breaks at chapter ends. The first week runs from the start of Book I to the end of Chapter III of Book IV, which is the office of the notary Stampa, and covers roughly half the book by word count. The second begins at Chapter IV of Book IV and runs to the end, passing through the quarrel with Firbo, Dida's laughter, the shot and the asylum.

If you read on an e-book or a phone, the page count changes, but the count of Books and chapters does not: they are the best ruler for planning your reading.
