Aluísio Azevedo lived with the Argentine Pastora Luquez, with no record of marriage, and adopted her two children, Pastor and Zulema.
He began his diplomatic career in 1895, when he practically stopped writing fiction. He served as consul in Spain, Japan, Argentina, England, and Italy, and died in Buenos Aires, his last post, on January 21, 1913.
