Questions · William Shakespeare

Who was Shakespeare's great love? How many wives did he have?

Shakespeare had only one wife, Anne Hathaway, and there is no record of another marriage. As for a great love, the sources do not allow us to say: the surviving documents record a marriage, baptisms, and a will, not feelings.

The marriage took place at the end of 1582, when he was 18 and she, according to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, is believed to have been 26, since her birth date is not known. The Worcester court issued the license on November 27, 1582. The next day two neighbors stood surety, and the chancellor allowed the banns to be read once, instead of the usual three times.

They had three children: Susanna, baptized on May 26, 1583, and the twins Hamnet and Judith, baptized on February 2, 1585. Hamnet died at 11 and was buried on August 11, 1596. The couple stayed married until his death in 1616; Anne died in 1623. In his will, Shakespeare left his wife "my second best bed," the second-best bed, a much-discussed clause, and most of his property went to his daughter Susanna.

The 154 sonnets speak of love, and it is tempting to read in them a love biography. But it is not known whether the poems and their characters are fiction or autobiography, and the addressees have never been identified with certainty. For this reason, anyone who points to a great love of Shakespeare's is speculating.
