How Many Pages Does Don Quixote Have?

Don Quixote runs to about 1,200 pages in an ordinary edition, divided into two parts: Part One, of 1605, with 52 chapters, and Part Two, of 1615, with 74, plus a prologue to each: 126 numbered chapters in all. The number varies with the format and the size of the type.

In words, the Spanish original has about 383,000, of which 188,000 are in Part One and 195,000 in Part Two, which gives each part roughly half the total: a Part One and a Part Two of similar length, both around 600 pages, in an edition of about 300 words per page.

The chapters vary widely in length. Chapter XV of Part Two has just over seven hundred words, and chapters XXXVII and XXXIX also do not reach a thousand; chapters XXXIII and XXXIV of Part One, the Curious Impertinent, exceed seven thousand, and so does chapter XLI, the one about Zoraida's escape. There are chapters that can be read in minutes and chapters that take one long sitting.

For an unhurried read, the reading schedule divides the book into 16 weeks, at about 11 pages a day, with breaks at the end of chapters. The first week covers the prologue and the first nine chapters of Part One, up to the windmills and the Arabic manuscript, and the last covers the final eleven chapters of Part Two, up to the death of Alonso Quijano. Since the chapters are not all the same length, some weeks are lighter and others heavier.
