Literary device

Repetition

Returning to the same word, the same phrase, or the same construction, at the beginning of verses or of successive sentences (anaphora) or throughout the text, to give rhythm, emphasis, or insistence.

In Notes from Underground

I am a sick man… I am a wicked man. I am an unattractive man. I think my liver hurts.

The construction «I am a man...» returns three times, at the start of each blow, and the dry repetition turns the defect into a litany. The rhythm stops suddenly at «my liver hurts», which disarms the gravity of the list.

Part One: The Underground, the underground man

I don't want to, I don't want to, I simply don't want to pay him his wages, I don't want to because I want it that way, because for that I have my will as master.
