In Russian, мокрый снег (mokry sneg), literally "wet snow" (our translation), is snow that melts as it falls, somewhere between rain and snow. It falls yellow and murky on the day the narrator begins to write, and it gives its title to Part Two: По поводу мокрого снега, "apropos of wet snow". It returns in the window on the afternoon of the dinner, over the sleigh that takes him home and over the walk back, after leaving Liza.
