The Ante-Purgatory is the base of the mountain, outside the gate, where those who converted late wait: those who died by force and turned back to God only at the last instant, the negligent who put off repentance, and those who died excommunicated from the Church. The wait is proportional to the delay in life, unless the prayer of a heart in grace shortens it. It runs from cantos III to VIII.
