Questions · Romeo and Juliet

Who is Paris in Romeo and Juliet?

Paris is the count who asks for Juliet's hand, a kinsman of Prince Escalus and of Mercutio, and the groom Capulet chooses for his daughter. He dies in the tomb, killed by Romeo, while going to watch over Juliet.

In Act I, scene 2, Paris asks Capulet for Juliet's hand, and Capulet replies that she is still young and that he should first win her heart. Paris says that younger women than she are happy mothers, and he receives the invitation to the ball. In scene 3, Juliet's mother presents him as a suitor. In Act III, scene 4, after Tybalt's death, Paris says that times of mourning do not suit courtship and that he would like the Thursday wedding to be the next day.

In Act IV, scene 1, he tells the friar that he has spoken little of love with Juliet, because she weeps for her cousin without measure, and that Capulet hastens the wedding to dry those tears. Juliet answers him with phrases of double meaning. In scene 5, he goes with musicians to fetch the bride and finds her dead, lamenting: deceived, divorced, outraged.

In Act V, scene 3, he goes at night to Juliet's tomb and scatters flowers. He sees Romeo break in, supposes that he has come to desecrate the bodies, and confronts him. Romeo asks him to flee, the fight happens anyway, and Paris falls asking to be laid beside Juliet. Romeo recognizes him, calls him a kinsman of Mercutio, and grants the request. At the end, the Prince says he has lost two kinsmen, and Paris is one of them.
