Nadryv

In Russian, надрыв (nadryv), "laceration" (our translation), comes from надрывать, "to tear, to strain beyond the limit". Madame Khokhlakova says the word about Katerina Ivanovna's conversation with Ivan, and Alyosha shudders because he murmured it in his sleep. Ivan applies it to Katerina's love for Mitya, which grows with the insults, and then uses it for the saint who embraces the beggar out of duty, in a nadryv of falsehood.
