A fraternal association that traces its roots to the medieval guilds of stonemasons, with lodges, three degrees of initiation (apprentice, journeyman and master) and its own rituals. The first Grand Lodge was founded in London in 1717. It spread Enlightenment ideals through an international network of members, and the Catholic Church either opposed it or forbade Catholics to join.
