Third Order

A lay Catholic association tied to a medieval religious order, such as the Franciscan, Carmelite, or Dominican. Members lived in the world but gathered around devotion to a patron saint. Laypeople led the association, and friars or priests gave spiritual guidance. In colonial Portuguese America, the third orders shaped social life, and some built wealthy churches.
