Comparison

Bringing two things together with an explicit word, such as "like", "just as", or "seems". Unlike the metaphor, the comparison leaves visible that they are two things.

In The Slum

And on that soaking, steaming land, in that hot and muddy damp, a world began to wriggle, to seethe, to grow, a living thing, a generation that seemed to sprout spontaneously right there from that swamp and multiply like larvae in dung

The word "like" brings the residents close to "larvae in dung" and puts the tenement on the level of a swarming swamp.
