Julius Caesar · Act I

The Triumph and Seduction of Brutus

Scenes in this act

  1. Scene I The Tribunes Disperse the Crowd

The tribunes Flavius and Marullus drive from the streets of Rome the craftsmen who are celebrating Caesar's triumph, and accuse them of forgetting Pompey, whom they had acclaimed before.

  2. Scene II Cassius Works on Brutus

During the Lupercal, a festival in which runners race through Rome, Julius Caesar passes in procession and orders Calpurnia to stand in the path of Mark Antony, who is about to run, since, according to the ancients, a barren woman touched in the race is freed from her curse.

  3. Scene III The Stormy Night

On a night of storm and portents, Casca rushes sword in hand to meet Cicero and tells what he has seen: a slave with a hand on fire that does not burn, a lion loose near the Capitol, women who swear they see men on fire, and a night bird screeching at noon in the square.
