Hill outside the city of Jerusalem where, according to the four Gospels, Jesus was crucified. The name comes from Aramaic and means skull, perhaps because of a pile of skulls or the shape of the ground. The traditional site is today inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built by order of Constantine between 326 and 335.
