Term

Brain Fever

A nineteenth-century medical diagnosis for a supposed inflammation of the brain, with mental confusion, which could lead to death. Later medicine concluded that many of these cases were encephalitis or meningitis, or reactions to an emotional shock. The term disappeared from medical literature in the early twentieth century, but it appears frequently in nineteenth-century novels.
