A French force separate from the army, initially formed of active citizens over 18 years of age, which served for policing and as a military reserve. It arose in 1789, during the Revolution; Charles X dissolved it in 1827, and a new guard was created in 1831, after the July Revolution. It was dissolved on March 14, 1872.
