A negotiable instrument by which the drawer orders the drawee to pay a certain sum to the payee, the creditor, and which circulates by endorsement. Even though the obligation to pay falls on the drawee, the drawer remains secondarily liable for payment. The instrument originated in medieval Italy, so that merchants could exchange coins from different regions when traveling.
