Extreme Unction

A Catholic sacrament in which the priest lays hands on the sick person and anoints the forehead and hands with blessed oil. For centuries it was often given only to the dying, hence the traditional name extreme unction; today it is called anointing of the sick, and the Second Vatican Council stressed that it is not only for the final moments. It is based on the Epistle of James (5:14-15).
