Character

Azazello

Who He Is

Member of Woland's retinue, red-haired and with a visible fang, who appears almost only through what he does: invitations, expulsions, a death at the ball, and the final wine. He is the one who fetches Margarita and who takes her, with the Master, out of Moscow.

They sent me to invite you for tonight.
Part Two, Chapter 19: Margarita

Trajectory

In chapter 7 he appears with the retinue in Stiopa Likhodeyev's room and, in chapter 10, with Behemoth, he drags Varenukha to apartment 50 (see apartment 50).

In chapter 18 the cat calls on him to throw Poplavsky out of apartment 50.

In chapter 19 he approaches Margarita near Berlioz's funeral procession and hands her the cream in a gold box; in chapter 23 he kills Baron Meigel at the ball, who was taken for a spy; and in chapter 24 he accompanies the Master and Margarita to the exit of the building on Sadovaya Street, from which a car driven by a crow takes them to the cellar on the Arbat. At the dinner after the ball, still in chapter 24, with his back to the pillow and without turning around, he hits with a shot the card that Margarita marked and Hella hid under the pillow.

The mark Margarita had made had been pierced by the bullet.
Part Two, Chapter 24: The rescue of the master

In chapter 29 he is on the terrace with Woland when Matthew Levi arrives, and it is to him that Woland assigns the task of settling the couple's fate.

In chapter 30 he brings up from the cellar a Falernian that he says was the wine of the procurator of Judea, toasts Woland with the couple, and after the two die, he takes them, in chapter 31, to the Sparrow Hills.

Poisoner...
Part Two, Chapter 30: It's time! It's time!

On the flight in chapter 32, the Moon (see the Moon) undoes the fang and the crooked eye, which turn out to be fake, and shows his true figure.

Now Azazello flew in his true appearance, like a demon of the waterless desert, a murderous demon.
Part Two, Chapter 32: Forgiveness and eternal refuge

Themes Embodied

The standard theme that runs through him is Death. The reading of chapter 30 on the wine:

Death arrives as a feast, not as punishment: the wine is offered as a tribute ("To Woland's health!"), and what looked like cruel poisoning was in fact the only way to free the two from the cellar, which Azazello then sets on fire. Azazello presents it as the wine the procurator of Judea used to drink; in chapter 25, however, the wine served to Pontius Pilate is a Caecuban, and the Falernian appears only in Afranius's question.
Part Two, Chapter 30: It's time! It's time!

Azazello opens and closes Margarita's path out of Moscow with two gifts that she accepts and that change the body of whoever takes them: the cream of chapter 19, which makes her ten years younger, and the Falernian of chapter 30, which kills her along with the Master.
