Giving a thing, an animal or an abstract idea the actions, feelings or speech of a person.
In Othello
O, beware, my lord, of jealousy! / It is the green-eyed monster, which doth mock / The meat it feeds on.
Jealousy takes on an action proper to people: the monster "lives to mock the flesh that fed it". By giving a feeling the gesture of mocking whoever nourishes it, Iago makes Othello hear jealousy as a living being, one that devours its owner and laughs at him.
