Play on words with similar sounds or with the several meanings of a single word, to be funny or to say two things at once.
In Othello
She loved me for the dangers I had passed, / And I loved her that she did pity them.
The repeated words "pity" and "pains" play on two meanings: her compassion and his suffering. She feels pity for the pains she hears of, and the repetition joins her feeling and his cause in a single expression.
Act I: Venice, the Night Accusation and the Senate's Judgment, Othello
